Poster on Althouse blog nails it:
"This just reinforces my ongoing impression that we've been living out a satire for the past year or two. We elected a callow nobody as President on the strength of a few vacuous speeches. The healthcare debate -- driving trillions of dollars in anticipated future expenditures -- got turned around by comments someone scrawled on Facebook, and now the Nobel Peace Prize committee has decided to award prizes for good intentions. It's like no one's even serious about anything anymore. None of it matters. It's the Society of the Spectacle."

I'll admit I was pretty surprised to hear about this award, and the first thing that crossed my mind was "for what?"
That's right.
Mother Theresa didn't deserve the Nobel Peace medal: after all, poverty and social/economic injustice endures in Calcutta far beyond her efforts.
And Desmond Tutu didn't deserve it, either... after all, apartheid (despite being supported by Republicans... right until it was ended) went on for years after he opposed it.
Only Bush Jr.'s adventures in war deserve to be given the benefit of hindsight many years after the fact!
Although I have many problems with our current "callow-nobody-in-chief" (and also wonder whether he's worthy of this award), I would contend that he has already made more inroads toward peace than any of the pro-imperialist war/pro-torture/nutbag neocons that pretend to be foreign policy experts despite their nearly universal condemnation by the actual professionals.
It's quite doubtful, but I hope we live in a new age of social and economic justice for all... only then will we all live in peace.
Love and respect,
Michael
